Building Curiosity

Cole Frederick

--

I’ve been writing on Medium for almost four years now and have absolutely loved my time on this website. Writing about various topics in science and math has given me an incredible opportunity to learn new things and connect with people who share my interests. Each week I get to dive into a new interesting topic and communicate this to others. This experience has almost made me reconsider my future career path toward one that is more writing-oriented just because of how much I love it.

However, I didn’t get here overnight. I can write about a wide variety of science and math topics due to all the wonderful educators who have taught me new things. I can trace my love of science back to my years of being homeschooled and dissecting owl pellets in the kitchen with my siblings. This was only developed further as I entered my local public school and was incredibly lucky to have some immensely supportive teachers. One in particular had a profound impact on me.

Like all good teachers, Mr. Reimink was prone to occasionally ignoring his usual class topic of biology and sharing with us some hard-earned life advice. One day in particular I will never forget. It began with him describing his love of science, especially biology. His son had recently graduated college with a degree in geology and was beginning to go on field campaigns to the northernmost reaches of Canada.
